Utility Scale

Grid scale, scarce land

Bangladesh needs roughly 760MW of new renewable capacity every year to 2030. Land, grid access and bankable offtake decide which projects actually get built.

The gap

The build rate has to roughly triple

Renewable capacity stood near 1,690MW at the end of 2025, of which grid-scale variable renewables were under 900MW by mid-2026. The 2030 target implies a pace the country has never sustained, and the financing gap is wider still.

What decides a project

Three constraints, in this order

Land

The binding constraint

Bangladesh has among the highest population densities on earth and very little land that is neither farmed nor flooded. Site selection is the project.

  • Title and tenure verified before anything else
  • Flood level and soil-bearing assessed on site
  • Char land, embankments and low-yield plots evaluated
  • Floating arrays where water is available instead

Grid access

Distance to a usable point

A site is only as good as its evacuation route. Substation headroom and the length of the interconnection often move the economics more than irradiance does.

  • Nearest substation capacity and voltage confirmed early
  • Interconnection cost carried in the model from day one
  • Wheeling arrangements where power is sold to a private buyer
  • Curtailment risk assessed against local demand

Offtake

Who signs, and for how long

Lenders fund contracts, not sunshine. The 2025 policy widened the options beyond a single state buyer, which changes who a project can be built for.

  • Direct sale to large industrial consumers
  • Bilateral tariffs reported to BERC
  • Surplus to public utilities at approved rates
  • Certificates and carbon credits where they add value

How we work

Development through to operation

1

Site identification and feasibility

Land screening, resource assessment, flood and soil analysis, grid proximity study, and an early view on whether the interconnection cost kills the project. Most candidate sites fail here, which is the cheapest place to fail.

2

Permitting and offtake

Approvals through the relevant authorities, and the commercial structure settled in parallel, whether that is a merchant arrangement with industrial buyers or sale into the public system. Financing follows the contract, so the contract comes first.

3

Engineering and construction

Detailed design, procurement against Tier-1 supply, civil and structural works, module and inverter installation, and the substation and evacuation line. Built to the standard the lender's technical adviser will inspect.

4

Operations

Remote monitoring with generation analytics, preventive maintenance, performance ratio audits, and warranty administration across a 25-year asset life. Output loss on a large array is expensive and usually invisible without instrumentation.

Floating solar and hybrid sites

Water instead of land

Reservoirs, retention ponds and canals can carry generation where land cannot be released. In a country this densely settled, surface water is often the only unallocated area available at scale, and the cooling effect tends to help module performance.

Storage where the grid is weak

Battery storage alongside a plant firms the output, reduces curtailment exposure and can shift delivery into the peak window where the tariff is highest. On weaker parts of the network it is what makes the interconnection viable at all.
